History

In the year 1928 our family business began with Helen and Charles Nowrocki
opening a restaurant called Hedges Grill located on Norton Street, this was
to be the beginning of what would be more than 75 years and 5 generations of
restaurateurs. The name evolved from the majestic row of hedges that was adjacent
to the restaurant. during the time of prohibition the hedges also served as a way
for Helen and Charles to discreetly serve the public, people would call "place their orders"
and the "alcohol" would be placed in the hedge for a later pick up. They moved in
1949 to a new location on the corner of Joseph and Leo called once again Hedges.
With the opening and running of the restaurant the couple had the help of their 2 sons,
Victor and Stanley, who both worked along side their parents in the family business.
In the true family tradition Helen and Charles along with their children, spouses and
grandchildren all resided above the restaurant form many years as well as worked together.
As the family grew they continued to serve the community with a family approach,
serving the neighborhood as well as many local ball park enthusiasts. It was not
long before both sons ventured into opening their own restaurants, while still helping
their parents run the family restaurant. victor and his wife Thelma opened The colonial
located on Empire Blvd, while Stan and Olga moved out to Webster to open what would become
Hedges Nine Mile Point.
Stan and Olga purchased the old hotel in 1954 from Hiram and May Wright. Olga and
Stan Norwacki then began the monumental task of improving and upgrading the property
which was originally a hotel that consisted of 12 bedrooms, dining room and bar, enhanced
by a large porch fro summer dining. The site of Hedges at the turn of the century
in 1900 was a small restaurant and hotel built by early Webster pioneers Hirma and May
Wright. Commercial fishing was important in the vicinity of the "Point" as well as the area
extending to the mouth of Irondequoit bay. Nets were used to catch great quantities of white
fish, salmon and sturgeon. Since the channel to Four Mile Creek was deep, fishing
boats anchored there easily.

In 1966 Olga with daughter Judith and son-in-law Barry Swift continued the business, expanding
and developing the property and business. Eventually Barry and Judith in perpetuating the
family business included their sons to work along with them. Barry and Judith's vision of a
premier restaurant located on the magnificent shore of Lake Ontario is enhanced by the
beauty of well manicured lawns, gardens, patios and gazebo.
Five generations of the Nowrocki-Swift family over more than forty-five years have
culminated in the beautifully run and immaculately maintained "Hedges Nine Mile Point Hotel".
Today Thad, Adam and Jason Swift are proud to continue to carry on the legacy of the
Nowrocki-Swift family along with their dedicated staff to serve you with exceptional service
and excellent cuisine.
